Young Ex-servicemen At Increased Risk Of Suicide PDF Print E-mail

Young men who have served in the British Armed Forces are up to three times more likely to take their own lives than their civilian counterparts, research published today (March 3) has found.
Researchers at The University of Manchester's Centre for Suicide Prevention linked UK military discharge data between 1996 and 2005 with details of suicides collected by the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicides and Homicides.
The study, published in the journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine, revealed that ex-servicemen under 24 years old were at greatest risk of suicide, with those in lower ranks and shorter military careers proving most vulnerable.
The report's authors, Professor Nav Kapur and colleagues, were unable to prove why younger ex-military personnel had higher rates of suicide than men of the same age in the general population but suggest three possibilities.
"One explanation for the higher suicide risk among young ex-military personnel is that those entering military service at a young age are already vulnerable to suicide, which would explain why those serving for a relatively short period of time before being discharged were most likely to take their own lives," said Kapur, lead author and professor of psychiatry and population health at Manchester University.
"A second explanation is the difficulty a minority of individuals experience making the transition to civilian life.
"However, a third possibility that we could not explore in this study is that exposure to adverse experiences during military service or active deployment played a role in the two to three-fold increase in suicide among young veterans, although many of those most at risk had not completed basic training and therefore had not deployed overseas."
The study, funded by the Veterans Policy Unit in the UK Ministry of Defence, also found that the suicide risk was highest among young men leaving the Armed Forces within the first two years of discharge.
The risk of suicide was also higher in young women aged under 20 years compared with the general population, but the overall numbers were small.
The overall suicide risk was no greater for ex-military personnel than for civilians when all age groups were considered 16 to 49 years. Men aged 30-49 years had a lower rate of suicide than the general population.
During the study period 233,803 individuals left the Armed Forces, of which 224 took their own lives. Worryingly, the research also found that veterans had a low rate of contact with mental health professionals in the year before death just 14% for those under 20 years of age and 20% for those under 24 years.
"Whatever the explanation for our findings, these individuals may benefit from some form of intervention," said Professor Kapur. "Initial pre-recruitment interview, medical examination and training are important in ensuring military health but it should be recognised that those discharged at any of these stages may be at higher risk of suicide."

Gender gap narrows as men live longer PDF Print E-mail

Males, Who Usually Die Years Earlier Than Women, May Live As Long As Their Wives Within 2 Generations John Harlow & Roger Waite. As long as men continue to improve lifestyles that are far healthier than in previous decades, and gains in women's health level off, the tipping point will arrive in about 2035, an American government statistician predicted last week.
That year will mark the birth of the first generation of westerners who can expect to live well into their late eighties, regardless of their
gender. In the past, western men died earlier than women because they went to war or took on jobs such as mining or deep sea fishing with chronic health consequences. The dominance of macho cultures also meant they tended to eschew improved medical and dietary advice which, since the 1940s, has helped women add 2½ months a year to their lifespan. Yet the latest survey released last week by the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that the gap is shrinking fast.

Why women commit less suicides than men PDF Print E-mail

The article misses out a very vital point that men do not get the kind of support a woman gets for her problems. A man is supposed to solve his problems on his own and is ridiculed, rather than being supported, for his inability to do so. Moreover there is no communication channel provided to a depressed men. Either his problems are invalidated or justified, and somehow he is blamed for it. If he does not a get a proper medium to communicate his issues, how can he be expected to find a solution to them so that suicide can be prevented. Moreover its a mis-representation that men think only about themselves while arriving at the decision for committing suicide. Its rather women who do not think about others before committing suicide and commit suicide as a means to gather attention.

150 Million men are impotent PDF Print E-mail

Time for such studies in India?? And in absence of such studies, another reason to have Men's Welfare Ministry

There are over 150 million impotent men worldwide and possibly many more who are undiagnosed since they are ashamed to talk about their condition or seek treatment.
“Because, in the past, men have generally been unwilling to talk about their problem or seek treatment, erectile dysfunction has been underreported. Many physicians are not aware of the treatment options, so patients have been either under treated or not treated at all,” said the Minnesota Men’s Health Center (MMHC).

Sneak A Peek

Men’s Rights – Perspiration or Inspiration?

As I think about the today's theme - it reminds me of Thomas Edison, the man who invented the electric bulb. He had made a famous statement "Things are 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration"

Same applies to men's rights movement as well. It is a matter of constant awareness campaign and hitting at our opponents and proponents of male abuse. Contrary to popular belief, it is 3 times easier to abuse a male than a female because males have no support structure and male abuse is accepted by the society as social service.

Follow Yourself; Not Tradition

As I have repeatedly mentioned in my articles that cultures have deceived men, acting as vultures. Men have been used as the FREE ATM MACHINE, the UNPAID BODYGUARD, the de-facto PROTECTOR and PROVIDER, etc. by cultures and in the process have been reduced to disposable entities. Their abuse is considered a social service now.

And men, the way they are, are in a great way responsible for this. They rarely challenge or question conventions, traditions, histrionics and stereotypes thrust upon them. They do not feel the need to fight for their rights - only a handful of them are doing though scores are getting victimized. They do not demand for their space in the society and accept things as offered to them.

To this effect, today I take the example of Skandagupta - the great emperor of India. His stepmother has him sent to Ujjain so that her son can be made the emperor. He obeys her. But then the Huns attack India under the leadership of Attila the Hun. The army of Skandagupta calls him back as they needed his expertise.
